Renee Villano, CPA

Senior Accountant at Grabowski, Sparano & Vincelette, Wilmington

"One day I could be working with the comptroller of a corporation, the next day I can be working with the wife of a small business owner who never heard of debits and credits. "

What does your job entail?
As a CPA in a small public accounting firm, I have the opportunity to practice in many areas of public accounting. During tax season, I meet with tax clients and prepare individual tax returns. Throughout the year, I perform auditing for not-for-profit organizations, prepare corporate Accounting Dictionaryfinancial statements and tax returns, and work directly with clients regarding small business matters and their accounting software needs.

What do you like about your job?
I like the variety my job provides me. I like the fact that I can be doing something different every day of the week. I also like the opportunity to get out of the office and work with a variety of people. One day I could be working with the comptroller of a Accounting Dictionarycorporation, the next day I can be working with the wife of a small business owner who never heard of Accounting Dictionarydebits and Accounting Dictionarycredits.

What advice would you give those considering becoming a CPA?
I would advise new graduates to work in the public accounting field. Public accounting is not for everyone, but I think all young accountants should have the opportunity to prepare tax returns, work on an Accounting Dictionaryaudit, and meet a variety of clients. The experience will not be lost if you begin working in industry. You will be better prepared to work with your company's outside accountants and auditors, having been in their position yourself. Also, I would suggest taking the exam as soon as you graduate. It is a difficult exam that requires a lot of studying and preparing. Once your books have been put away for a year and you're working full-time, it may not be as easy to get back into "study" mode.
